Fall Practicum Week 3

Week 3 (9/21/08)

Record of Ministry Activities

Plan and Coordinate Youth Events on Tuesday (1 ½ Hours) – We have a lock-in coming up in a couple of weeks and we discussed some of the ideas that we had in order to make it a successful one. Some of the ideas we came up with were prayer stations and other opportunities for spiritual development, while still keeping it fun.

Supervise and Coordinate Youth at Youth Group (3 Hours)

Drive Van and Drop Off Students (1 ½ Hours)

Personal Reflection on Ministry

This week was more of a “typical” week at youth group. We didn't have a special event or speaker or anything. It was our normal youth pastor giving a normal message. It was good, because I got to see everyone back in their “safe” zone. When students get to a safe and comfortable state of mind, they are more open to share things that are happening in their lives. I really saw that happen tonight. I saw students sharing thoughts and ideas that otherwise would never share anything. From talking openly about relationships to their spiritual lives, I felt as if I got to know the students a little better. Many of them will just talk to you and accept you as their friend right away without question. I'm hoping to get to know a lot of them a little better this semester. In the past, I concentrated more on getting my “requirements” taken care of and not worry about relationships. This semester will be different.

Spiritual Reflection

Spiritually, things are going great. There seems to be such a fervor amongst the students to do something significant in their lives. Not all of them have a solid thing to hold on to and claim as their own. Let alone their spirituality. So to see some of them interested in actually pursuing some significance in their spiritual lives is really something awesome to observe. I just hope that personally I don't do anything to thwart this fervor. I'm doing my best to answer questions that they might have. But sometimes, I fear that I am not the best example for them of what a strong spiritual life appears to be. I'm going to have to improve this.

Tyler it sounds like you know your youth group pretty well! I am just wondering about the "normal" night, how often do you find yourselves having a normal night? I feel like growing up i would attend a normal youth group almost everyweek and it made it so routine for me that i didnt want to come anymore. Do you think there is a balance to having normal nights and inviting people in. Because i know you want to keep that safe zone with the kids but have them hear from new people at the same time, i was just wondering how you balance that? Also it is great to hear how well the kids are responding they seem to really be doing great things and i am excited for you as you continue on in their lives!
